Whether you are in a familiar location or somewhere new, there are always opportunities to enrich your child's vocabulary or extend their numeracy skills. So wherever you are, introduce your child to:

• new nouns (names of things) – for example, the zoo has enclosures, railings, shelters, and new animals; the shopping centre has aisles, escalators, mannequins
• new verbs (doing words) – for example, at the playground you can swing, climb, leap, crawl and slide; at the department store you can purchase, browse and exchange 
• new adjectives (descriptive words) – for example, at the museum you might see things that are fragile or prehistoric or intriguing; at the park you might see plants that are spiky or fragrant or deciduous
• new words for directions – for example, you might need to go round clockwise, or take a sharp left, or move parallel 
• new ways to measure – for example, in a paved square your child could measure their shadow in hand spans, shoe lengths, or pavers.
