Everyday ways to help your child with literacy and numeracy
Child standing near road sign

Developed in partnership with Education Services Australia

Going out with your child is a great opportunity to practise the vocabulary and skills needed for navigating and following directions. Here are just a few ideas:

  • point out signs and help your child read them – eg roads, suburbs, shops, parks
  • talk (a lot!) about left and right until your child has mastered them
Let’s turn right into the car park.
Is the supermarket on the left or the right?
  • describe where things are
The park is next to the school.
The fruit shop is opposite the bakery.
  • challenge your child to follow a set of directions through a playground or similar space.
Climb over the monkey bars, crawl through the tunnel, run around the pole, and finish at the slide.
