Whether you’re in the car or on public transport, games based on literacy and numeracy concepts help to make journeys pass more quickly, while developing your child's skills. These ideas will get you started:

• play Alphabet Signs
  Let's see how many signs we can spot with the letters of your name.
• name and count different types of vehicles, such as cars, buses, bicycles, trucks, cranes, diggers, fire engines. (If you pass roadworks and construction sites, you might need to do some research so you can tell a backhoe from a front end loader!)
• play the Rainbow Game
  Let's see if we can spot people wearing red.
  How many green cars can we find before we reach our stop?
• look for patterns in the traffic
  I saw three white cars in a row.
  Look, there's a red car, then a grey car, then a red car.
• play prediction games
  Do you think the next traffic light will be green or red?
  What colour do you think the next car that passes us will be?
• play Crazy Number Plates – spot a number plate, and make up a crazy title by thinking of words that start with the letters on the plate. This makes a good guessing game too, though it can get pretty hard!
  Look, that number plate starts with YEK. How about 'Yoda Eats Kiwifruit'!
